‘I’m on my way home from Bellville to Milnerton. I’ve been riding bikes since I was four – BMXs and stuff. It’s only recently that I’ve been riding longer distances. I ride to work about three times a week, depending on the weather. Other times I take the motorbike or car. The bike was a hand-me-down from three families – inherited and passed on and fixed up – a real kanniedood. I had an expensive bike as well but I wrote it off. That’s what happens when you try to do BMX tricks on a mountain bike. This bike is a bit customised: it’s been coming along for 13 or 14 years. It’s been through off-road riding, it’s been ramped, my friend even towed me with a motorbike. I held his hand and he pulled me along the N1 highway. The fastest he said we were going was 140km/h – then the front bearing seized up and the wheel locked. I went over the bars. I’ve broken everything – legs, arms, hurt my back. Been to the ICU. Been all over.’
